			<h2>How ontologies are used in PolyAnalyst™</h2>
<p>PolyAnalyst™ utilizes ontologies to search for and extract pertinent information. Within PolyAnalyst™, ontologies are imported as distinct &#8220;semantic dictionaries,&#8221; which are then used by PDL (Pattern Definition Language) to extract text patterns that correspond to various medical entities and their relationships as defined within those semantic dictionaries. In addition to the existing ontologies, users have the ability to create their own ontologies.</p>
<p>PolyAnalyst can import and start working with any kinds of ontologies. Some of these ontologies can be used free of charge, others require the user to obtain a license from the ontology owner. Currently, the following ontologies are provided along with PolyAnalyst™ (out-of-the box):</p>

<li><a href="https://wordnet.princeton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WordNet</a>: a broad semantic ontology that attempts to build a lexical database of English nouns, verbs, adjectives, and the relationships between them.</li>

<p>The Dictionary Manager in PolyAnalyst™ is the most direct way to access, edit, and view any imported ontologies in PolyAnalyst™. For example, you can import and view MeSH dictionary in PolyAnalyst™, searching for terms such as “CVA” to view all the associated information.</p>

			<p>These ontologies can also be accessed within the project nodes. Some key nodes that utilize these types of ontologies include Entity Extraction and Taxonomy. Within these nodes, users have the option to select which ontology to import. Subsequently, they can craft a query to identify semantically related terms, such as synonyms, hyponyms, or hypernyms, or any other semantic relations, as defined within that particular ontology.</p>

			<p>The example below illustrates how a query searching for medical conditions within the &#8220;influenza and pneumonia&#8221; category, as per ICD-10, can be simplified by leveraging the PDL functions integrated into PolyAnalyst™ in conjunction with the MeSH ontology. By employing the &#8220;hyponym&#8221; function, as shown below, it becomes possible to capture all the subtypes of influenza and pneumonia without the need to list them individually.</p>

			<p>Lastly, one of the challenges of using ontologies is the issue of ontology cleaning, which involves removing or correcting errors, inconsistencies and irrelevant or outdated information in the ontology. This is particularly important in specialized domains, such as chemistry or toxicology, where the ontology may contain a large number of concepts and entities that are not relevant to the domain or may cause confusion or misinterpretation (i.e., “milk” or “coffee” being present within a chemical substance ontology). Thankfully, the task of modifying ontologies is quite straight-forward within the Dictionaries module of PolyAnalyst™.</p>

<h2><b>Tip 1: Start with a clear purpose &#038; story</b></h2>
<p>Think of the dashboard as a display to summarize key information for your audience. In a single glance, they can analyze trends and glean the types of insights that drive effective decision making. To achieve this goal, one should determine the most significant or high-level insights (blue: top segment) and display them more prominently in the dashboard.</p>
<p>Additionally, “Important Details” (brown: middle segment) and the “Background Info” (beige: bottom segment) are also important pieces of the story to include within the dashboard. These segments are easily ignored by data analysts; but, we would not recommend eliminating or reducing these segments. An incomplete story is an inaccurate one and may discredit the overall integrity of the final report.</p>

<p>Dashboard content must be organized in a way that reﬂects the nature of the information being displayed. It not only needs to create efficiency for the audience, but it should also provide a manageable foundation for the report itself. Building modules is one method that can help you to create a basic structure and skeleton for your design, so that you can achieve an organized data display with effective alignment and consistency. We recommend keeping these DO’s and DON’Ts in mind when assessing your dashboard layout.</p>

<p>When making decisions on what information should go where, DO consider the way users naturally read and interpret information. The key design principles for many modern UX designers were proposed in the 1900s, when the Gestalt School of Psychology began studying human perception through a series of experiments. Below is a summary of the “<a href="https://hub.packtpub.com/dashboard-design-best-practices/">six principles</a>” these studies uncovered.</p>

			<p>Once the first row has been established, move down to the next row. Dependencies between the components in different rows will add enrichment to the dashboard and also an element of continuity. In this example, it is important to use a clean structure and an organized layout that guides the audience through the dashboard intuitively. Adopting this type of continuous flow helps the audience recognize the relationship between different groups of information more easily.</p>

<p>We hope these design tips are useful when creating your next dashboard or report. Before you start the design concept, remember to always clarify what type of data and how much information the audience needs or wants to see. And be sure to carefully consider which information is truly the “Most Newsworthy”, and which information is just “background information” that adds little value. Also, once the dashboard is created, be sure to go back and ask the following:</p>

<li>Is the dashboard organized with a prioritized layout?</li>
<li>Are the visualization components displaying the proper level of detail?</li>
<li>Is there anything I can do to reduce the size of components or rearrange them to add clarity?</li>

			<h2>Data-driven versus analyst-driven analysis</h2>
<p>When we approach unstructured text data, there are two basic types of analysis we can use: data-driven and analyst-driven. In some contexts, “data-driven” refers to how an organization approaches strategic decision making. But in this case, we’re talking about an exploratory approach to analyzing comments and feedback. Essentially, data-driven analysis approaches use statistical methods and unsupervised machine learning techniques to explore text data and discover insights. Some examples of these techniques include automated keyword extraction, text clustering, and automated taxonomy generation.</p>
<p>Analyst-driven approaches, on the other hand, use supervised learning techniques where other inputs from human analysts are used to customize the analysis. Often, the analyst-driven approaches take what’s revealed by the data-driven exploratory analysis and then go beyond this to customize a structure that’s meaningful to the specific text dataset you’re working with. For example, an analyst may prepare a customized sentiment analysis scale or create a hand-crafted taxonomy to classify the attitudes of customers and the themes in their feedback surveys.</p>
<h2>Data-driven analysis for customer surveys</h2>
<p>To really see how data-driven analysis techniques can improve the analysis of text-based feedback, we’ll walk through some of the data-driven analysis capabilities found within Megaputer’s PolyAnalyst™ analysis platform that were used in a prepared project. This project analyzed customer feedback for a series of toothpaste products. A sample of the raw data is shown below.</p>

			<p>The dataset for the project contained approximately 1,200 survey records. The records contained 4 structured data fields—the gender of the reviewer, the toothpaste product reviewed, a Likert-scale rating of the product provided by the reviewer, and a Likert-scale rating of the reviewer’s buying intention after testing the product. These records also contained an unstructured data field for customers to make suggestions on what to improve for the toothpaste product they tested.</p>
<p>After loading the data, several steps of data cleansing and pre-processing were performed to ready the column of text for analysis. <a href="https://www.megaputer.com/data-cleansing-with-unstructured-data/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Data cleansing is a highly important task</a>, especially for text analysis. Typically, this involves intuitive things like spell checking and de-duplication. However, less obvious is the need for abbreviation expansion and standardizing terms by mapping unknown synonyms.</p>
<p>At this point, we typically begin the data-driven analysis, to reveal the various themes and patterns in the text of the customer reviews. In PolyAnalyst™, there are multiple analysis features that assist analysts with this process. We’ll now go over a few of the data-driven analysis methods and the type of results you can obtain by performing these operations on your text data.</p>
<h2>Automated Keyword and Phrase Extraction</h2>
<p>With the advent of Natural Language Processing (NLP), keyword extraction has become a go-to method among analysts for identifying important terms from plain text. At their core, keyword extraction algorithms count the frequency of specific words that appear in the text. In PolyAnalyst™, basic keyword statistics are derived from the well-known Open American National Corpus (OANC). Once commonly used words are removed (i.e., a, an, the, etc.), the counts of each word are tabulated. The results can be displayed as a word cloud, where the color and size of a word reflects its significance and frequency, respectively, in the dataset.</p>
<p>Some of you may be thinking, &#8220;Wait a minute, what is significance?&#8221; Significance is another metric used to reveal the importance of a keyword despite its frequency in the dataset. For example, if our analysis is based on a giant corpus of generic data where we expect to see the keyword <em>baseball</em> 10 times in 1000 documents, then it would be significant to see <em>baseball</em> show up 200 times in the same amount of documents. Even though the keyword &#8220;register&#8221; might show up twice as many times as <em>baseball</em>, this doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean it is more significant. Perhaps the keyword <em>register</em> is actually expected to appear 500 times in the same amount of documents. Furthermore, a keyword like <em>baseball</em> is even more significant when we provide our analysis model a relevant baseline, such as a corpus of data related to hygiene products. In that event, if <em>baseball</em> showed up even 10 times in a toothpaste survey data, that would certainly be worth some further investigation.</p>
<p>But in our case,  <em>baseball</em> didn&#8217;t show up in our customer reviews on toothpaste products. Here are the main results of automated keyword extraction:</p>

			<p>As you can see, the main themes in the unstructured text column are starting to emerge. Some of these terms we could guess very easily, such as <em>toothpaste</em>, <em>tooth</em>, and <em>mouth</em>. And because these terms are merely identifying the physical items and areas the toothpaste affects, we could essentially discount these themes as far as their relevance to our analysis. On the other hand, we see <em>taste</em>, <em>cap</em>, and <em>texture</em> are also prevalent themes in the text. This gives us some insight into the high-level issues that customers cited regarding the toothpaste products.</p>

			<h2>Text Clustering</h2>
<p>Clustering is a helpful technique that sorts related records into groups based on their common themes.  In PolyAnalyst™, a modified version of the Suffix Tree Clustering algorithm is used to search for sets of records with shared phrases, and then these clusters are merged together based on the percent of records containing the phrases. Users can specify various options, including the clustering method (K-means, pLSA, etc.), and the Text Clustering function automatically generates a classification model based on the clusters of terms within the text column you select. The output provides a report of the identified clusters.</p>
<p>Here is the view of the results from text clustering in PolyAnalyst™.</p>

			<p>These clusters can give you a sense of some of the words that may go together in various categories and subcategories. For example, in the top left panel of the image, we see that the records in Cluster 2 contain the themes <em>taste</em> and <em>strong</em>, whereas Cluster 5 contains records with topics like <em>cap</em>, <em>tube</em>, and <em>messy</em>. Since Cluster 5 is highlighted, we see the other keywords that were commonly found in the cluster (lower left panel), and on the right, we can see the records in that cluster and can view the text of a selected record in the text panel.</p>
<p>We may observe that many of the clusters here contain sets of words that we’ve already discovered from automated keyword extraction, which confirms the themes are present in the customer reviews. So, from this, it seems like the following themes are among the top aspects being discussed by customers: <em>taste</em>, <em>texture</em>, <em>packaging</em> (i.e., cap, tube), and <em>after effects</em> (i.e., clean feeling, aftertaste).</p>
<h2>Auto Taxonomy Generation</h2>
<p>Another common method for data-driven analysis is automatic taxonomy construction (ATC). In this case, the system uses NLP algorithms to process unstructured text and generate a hierarchical classification of the content. This unsupervised method of discovering the various concepts and themes in the text is also highly transparent because the resulting structure is based on the frequency of terms present in the data. ATC is typically a good starting point for identifying additional topics arising from the text, prior to an analyst crafting a customized classification structure.</p>
<p>In PolyAnalyst, automated taxonomies can be generated in multiple ways. The Auto Taxonomy feature can be used directly on the unstructured text data to extract themes, or a taxonomy can be created using the results of keyword extraction. Typically, both approaches are useful to perform when exploring the text data, particularly because the results can vary between methods.</p>
<p>Here are the auto taxonomy results for the toothpaste product survey comments, both with and without the automated keyword extraction inputs.</p>

			<p>When the results from keyword extraction are used, the system constructs a fairly extensive taxonomy structure of the product review themes. For example, we still see the themes we discovered earlier, like<em> taste</em>, <em>cap</em>, and <em>texture</em>, but we also see more details behind these concepts, such as <em>sensitive teeth</em> and <em>mint flavor</em>.</p>
<p>Using another automated taxonomy method, without the keywords, the system generates a different overall structure for the text data. We see some similarities in the themes compared to the first automated taxonomy the system constructed. For example, we see topics such as <em>cap/tube</em> and <em>flavor/mint</em> appear in both category structures. However, in this second taxonomy, we also see themes like <em>morning/night</em> and <em>good job</em>. When we drill down to the underlying records, we can see that consumers usually provide information about what time of day they use the toothpaste and whether the toothpaste product did a ‘good job’ of cleaning their teeth. However, it will be up to the analyst to decide where these types of topics should appear in the hierarchical classification structure.</p>
<h2>The Precursor to Analyst-Driven Analysis</h2>
<p>Data-driven techniques are clearly an important method of exploring unstructured text data. As a precursor to analyst-driven approaches, data-driven analysis equips users with a useful starting point so that they can impart a more meaningful structure onto text, improving the overall analysis results. Through this article, we hope you have gained a general overview of some of the unsupervised data-driven analysis techniques you can apply in your own analysis work.</p>

			<p>As the saying goes, “mo’ data, mo’ problems.” Well, that’s not quite the saying and that’s not quite what we mean, but it certainly is true that large data comes with some problems that need to be solved. There are two ways that data can be “big.” Traditionally, Big Data is considered large literally by its physical size in terms of the memory space it consumes. In this article, we&#8217;re considering another type of “big” data, which we like to call Wide Data. Wide Data is unstacked tabular data that consists of large amounts of columns or variables, usually in the hundreds and above. Wide Data and Big Data are often overlapping but they are not necessarily the same: for example, Wide Data can be shallow, with relatively small number of rows &#8211; but large number of columns. Wide Data is common and comes with its own set of problems that need to be addressed in any analytical setting. Next, let’s discuss those problems.</p>

			<h2>The Problems of Wide Data</h2>
<p>One issue about wide Data is that it is bulky, and this presents challenges that aren&#8217;t present in more compact datasets. For example, a person can quickly scan a table of a few columns, maybe even a dozen or more, to summarize what it contains. That quick scan will tell a person what sort of information is contained there, determine if the data is sparse, and provide a rough estimate of the range and variance of the data. This sort of quick summarization is impossible with Wide Data. Even scrolling through column names (if they are informative at all) takes some time to do, and in the end, it is usually impossible to retain all that information.</p>
<p>Not only is Wide Data confusing for us humans, but it can also be confusing for machines as well if we have an especially large number of columns. If we want to <a href="https://www.megaputer.com/choosing-machine-learning-models/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">create a machine learning model with Wide Data</a>, our model might suffer from a complexity problem. A large number of inputs to some machine learning model can make the training of this model either unstable or time-consuming.</p>

			<p>So, what to do? Large numbers of columns aren’t ideal for either humans or machines, but we don’t want to just throw out columns randomly to reduce the size of the data, as we could risk losing important data. <strong>The solution is dimensionality reduction</strong>, a common technique in data science. Dimensionality reduction will reduce the number of columns that we have in our data while minimizing any loss of information as a result. These techniques are extremely useful in cutting out the fat from data while retaining the value.</p>

			<h2>Dimensionality Reduction in PolyAnalyst™</h2>
<p>PolyAnalyst™ contains several built-in methods for performing dimensionality reduction. We&#8217;ll highlight a couple of these below.</p>
<p>The first method is <em>Data Simplification.</em> This process scans data to identity columns that are nearly uniform. A column with almost no variation is very uninformative and could be dropped entirely. Additionally, Data Simplification compares the columns with one another to see if there are any that are nearly identical. These columns can be triaged so that only one remains in the dataset to avoid unnecessary duplication. In addition to Data Simplification, Correlation Analysis can be performed to discover correlated variables. While not identical, strongly correlated variables serve a common purpose and we could consider cutting down to one in this case as well.</p>
<p>The second method is <em>Factor Analysis</em>, which includes techniques such as principal component analysis. The goal of this method is to find the vectors along which most of the variance occurs in the data, reorient the data along those vectors, and discard the vectors in which little variance occurs. This is best understood with an animation.</p>

			<p>In this example, we have measured and plotted only two variables—height and weight. We can see the direction along which most of the variance occurs. This is the principal component. Now we rotate our data such that this direction is our horizontal axis and the orthogonal direction is the vertical axis. This destroys the semantic meaning of these axes of course, but this not a big deal. Where they were once semantically width and height, they now hold no such meaning. We will be able to regain the meaning after performing the analysis in the smaller number of dimensions and rotating the results back to the original axes. Now, if we would like to shrink the size of our data, we can throw out the vertical axis, which exhibits little variance. Thus, we have eliminated an entire variable but preserved the majority of the useful information, which simplifies further analysis.</p>

			<h2>Why talk about color moods?</h2>

This was the impetus for establishing color moods in PolyAnalyst. As a modern approach to PolyAnalyst&#8217;s original color palette, “color moods” are the way we envisioned to help users spend more time worrying about the accuracy of the results and less about polishing reports so they are well received. The results don&#8217;t always speak for themselves to all audiences, so it&#8217;s important we make every effort to help important insights stand in the spotlight.</p>
<p>One way we worked to achieve this goal was by enabling users to easily apply global, specialized color palettes to the report&#8217;s visual components being published. Each color mood has a theme and has been repeatedly tested to ensure it offers an out-of-the-box, harmoniously-balanced color option while also effectively distinguishing numerous slices of data. This feature draws from color theories and color formulas, eliminating the struggle some users may have in choosing the right color and refining color balance. Unless the user has a corporate color palette, this is a way to achieve well-balanced visuals for reporting.</p>
<p>In addition to having access to the default palettes and 10 built-in color moods, PolyAnalyst users can choose to add additional colors to any of the palettes. And there is also still the option of creating your own custom color palettes for yourself or for others to use in their projects. These features are intended to increase flexibility and assist marketing for control on branding standards.</p>

			<h2>What is the inspiration behind each color mood?</h2>
<p>The phrase &#8220;color mood&#8221; is the appropriate terminology for describing the color palette in the new PolyAnalyst interface because each collection was inspired by a feeling or connection to a specific place in time; therefore, we are invoking a mood with each color choice. When custom color moods are in development, a designer can choose to think about a location or a time where the colors added to the experience. And while the interpretation of color is subjective, the color moods are intended to elicit an emotion. Thus, in the final color collection, the colors were selected based on whether they reflected the physical landscape with objectivity while also creating a ‘feeling’ that’s picture perfect.</p>
<p>Each resulting color mood represents a generalized, overall expression that depicts the theme’s framework. For example, if your goal is to evoke a feeling of sincerity, then perhaps the Monday Blues color mood would be appropriate. If, however, you want to communicate energy and growth, then maybe the Rain Forest color mood would be a good choice.</p>

<p>In the end, color is meant to be fun, serious, inventive, revealing—basically, anything a person wants it to be. And we now offer a variety of color moods to reflect these individual preferences and needs. Providing a harmoniously-balanced color palette, with a universal option that can apply the palette over several projects, allows the user to focus more on the information and less on deciding which colors work well together. We also have the <em>PA 20 – PRO</em> and <em>PA 30 – PRO</em> default color palettes, which contain colors that were pulled from the individual color moods. These expanded palettes will accommodate larger result blocks in your pie charts and line graphs, eliminating color redundancy in a majority of the cases.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Creating reports with <a href="https://www.megaputer.com/polyanalyst/">PolyAnalyst</a> is a great way to illustrate the insight that you gained from analysis. However, creating a nice looking report can be challenging. For example, how do you decide which results to display at the top of your report? How will viewers of the report interact with it? We are happy to provide you some tips for building better looking reports.</p>
<p>Planning comes first. Your objective of creating a report is to encapsulate and demonstrate what you have learned. You need to focus on your audience and ensure your design facilitates your audience getting their questions answered.</p>
<h2>Tip #1. Design the front page</h2>
<p>There is no fixed way to build the first page. You design it based on how you would like to tell your story. It could be a title page with an image of the product from your data, an overview of the data, or a visualization of your most striking result. If you choose to create an overview page, we recommend that you include basic information on the key columns contributing to your main results. Engaging overview pages often use a combination of bar charts, pie charts, filters, link graphs, word clouds and drill-down tables to show demographic and summary information. An overview page serves to introduce the audience to the key features of the data and helps the audience better understand your results and insights that follow.</p>
<p>In the example below, we have the first page for a web report that analyzed customer opinions on a toothpaste. When clicking on a keyword in the word cloud, both the link analysis and survey data table get updated accordingly. Currently, the keyword “taste” is being selected, so all associated visualizations and data tables are updated automatically to results relevant to this keyword.</p>

<h2>Tip #2. Use a variety of tools</h2>
<p>To make the report more vivid and engaging, try including a variety of visualizations, keeping in mind the questions you intend to answer. Some of our favorite visualization nodes include: Bar Chart, Pie Chart, Graph node, Tag Cloud, Modify Columns (as drill-down tables), Dimension Matrix, Trend Graph, OLAP Table, Treemap, GIS Object, and Bubble Chart. Here is a screenshot demonstrating some of these visualizations:</p>

<p>Note that the overview page under tip #1 shows a word cloud using the Tag Cloud node, a link analysis using the Graph node, and a drill-down table of the survey data from a Modify Columns node.</p>
<p>In addition to the usual visualizations, you can generate interest with interactive tools such as a statistic widget or a variety of filters. In the screenshot “GIS: Derived Issues by Dealership” in the next section, the “Quantity of Claims by State” component is an example of a statistic widget.</p>
<h2>Tip #3. Choose meaningful filters</h2>
<p>Using meaningful filters is a powerful strategy for discovering business insights in the data. Interactive filters allow you to drill down to specific detailed segments of data, while weeding out records irrelevant to your specific business concern. In general, you may find location and date information to be helpful filters. Depending on your project, you may find other useful filters. For example, for the analysis of a dataset of car warranty claims meaningful filters include vehicle series, model, production year, and engine type.</p>

<h2>Tip #4. Utilize customization options</h2>
<p>Usually, we need to modify the default settings of some visualization charts to meet our needs. For example, depending on how much space you have for the chart, you may need to adjust the font size, remove the legend, or modify the component’s margins. You can explore the customization options in the header menu (including component properties, enhanced drill down, and so on) and the menu bar (including file, sheet, window and settings). Also, you can rename your page titles and charts to reflect the information or results that you want to show. Suitable titles greatly help the audience correctly understand your points. In sum, the ultimate goal of using customization options is to make it more convenient for the audience to quickly absorb the information and better understand your point of view.</p>
<h2>Tip #5. Choose a thoughtful color palette</h2>
<p>Coloring your charts is also an important part of a report. Be thoughtful and pick a color palette that is likely to catch your audience’s eye without distracting them from the analysis. A safe choice is a color palette that is consistent with the logo and website colors of your intended audience. <h2>Tip #6. Organize your pages</h2>
<p>First, have a business story in mind. Then, according to the flow of your story, arrange the pages in your report to support that story. It can be difficult to follow pages that jump around different topics, so try to make your story smooth and compelling by putting related pages together.</p>
<p>For example, if you are working on a project that analyzes customer reviews, we typically begin with an overview of the data (e.g., demographic distribution, main topics, etc.). Then in subsequent pages we can show overall customer sentiment and drill down to more specific angles, such as negative sentiment in certain locations using the GIS map or overall growth in positive or negative sentiment of certain topics.</p>
<p>With these tips and tricks in mind, you can begin enhancing your web report to convey your business insights effectively. Have fun playing around with different visualization nodes, filters, customization options, and color palettes. We look forward to seeing your stunning web reports!</p>
