The U.S. firm Fuld & Co. has finished assessing 170 competitive and business intelligence software packages. Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the consultancy, which itself offers competitive intelligence services, began drawing up the annual list in 1998 and this year – as in the past – its verdict on what the market offers is mixed.
Firstly, Fuld & Co. noted that a growing number of retailers are naming their products “business intelligence software.” In most cases, they are programs vaguely capable of providing data warehouses and quantitative analysis.
Competitive intelligence software packages able to identify and analyze qualitative information were thinner on the ground. Fuld’s best marks went to 12 products. Among the best products Fuld lists Megaputer Intelligence’s TextAnalyst 2.0.

On a related note, TextAnalyst 2.0 was recognized in “Document Warehousing and Text Mining” book by Dan Sullivan.
This book, published by John Wiley in 2001, is the first and most thorough introduction to the subjects of Document Warehousing that deals with the organization, management and reuse of textual documents, and Text Mining that is concerned with semantic text analysis, document clustering, categorization, summarization, and feature extraction.
Dan Sullivan writes:
Although it runs only on Win32 platforms, TextAnalyst is one of the best tools to use whether you are just starting out or need sophisticated feature extraction and term relationship maps. TextAnalyst comes with an interface so you can begin using it immediately, or you can use the COM interface for custom application development.
